Nathan Long, Ed.D., was appointed President of University of Western States (UWS) by the Board of Trustees on October 7, 2024, following his service as interim president beginning in June 2024. Before joining UWS, Dr. Long served as president of Saybrook University in Pasadena, California, from August 2014 through June 2024. Saybrook is a non-profit, regionally accredited private university and a member of The Community Solution Education System. During his tenure there, he also hosted the podcast Saybrook Insights with President Nathan Long, featuring conversations with faculty, students, alumni, and community leaders to advance ideas that support individual and community well-being.
Dr. Long holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance (trombone and conducting); a Master of Education in Educational Studies with cognates in educational psychology and sociology; and a Doctor of Education in Educational Studies, with concentrations in history, sociology, and peace and urban education. His scholarly work includes several peer-reviewed articles and co-edited or co-authored publications, including African American Peace Leaders of the 20th Century (Mellen Press, 2003), written with Drs. Marvin Berlowitz and Eric Jackson.
Prior to and during his time in academia, Dr. Long played professionally and semi professionally, performing with groups including The Middletown Symphony Orchestra, The Lexington Philharmonic, City Jazz Ensemble of San Francisco, Mt. Auburn Brass, and the Lexington Brass Ensemble.
Dr. Long is married to professional actor and singer Kimberly Schroeder Long. She performs regularly across the Palm Springs region. They maintain their permanent home in Southern California, while Dr. Long resides in Portland, Oregon, in service to UWS.
