Course Description 

This educational program will give you clinically relevant and evidence-based information related specifically to temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) and orofacial pain diagnosis and management. The speaker will talk you through the steps in the physical examination process, which includes inspection, palpation, and auscultation of head and neck structures. Special explanation of exam processes and testing will be given to diagnosis common TMJ dysfunction such as synovitis, capsulitis, and myofascial pain syndromes. A special focus on treating the muscles of mastication, intraoral and extraorally, will be addressed. Attendees will learn how chronic poor posture has been shown to be a perpetrator in TMD, and how rehabilitation exercises and techniques may correct for this. This unique multi-disciplinary approach to evaluation and care can help your patients. 

Learning Objectives 

• Know all of important neck and neck anatomy in its relation to the structures of the TMJ 

• Identify sources of somatic, referral, and neuropathic pain to the TMJ 

• Understand the importance of performing a full head and neck examination when dealing with a patient with TMJ pain and/or dysfunction 

• Build an understanding in properly diagnosing and treatment planning of various scenarios that might cause TMJ pain and dysfunction
