Critical Response: Concussion Recognition & Emergency Protocols for Life-Threatening On-Field Scenarios

This course prepares chiropractors to manage acute head injuries and related emergencies that occur during athletic and community events. Participants will learn how to identify life-threatening injuries, including head trauma, assess red-flag neurological signs, and implement proper emergency protocols in line with ACBSP® Position Statements and Florida law. Emphasis will be placed on triage, assessment, and legal decision-making required when removing an athlete from the field of play. Chiropractors will also explore their collaborative role within the sports medicine team, focusing on risk mitigation and rapid care delivery to support optimal outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify clinical signs and symptoms that indicate life threats requiring immediate removal from play.
  2. Apply updated evidence-informed concussion assessment tools and triage protocols during on-field emergencies.
  3. Execute emergency methods, including appropriate stabilization, referral, and transfer of care strategies.
