    Nathan Schilaty DC, PhD

    Nathan Schilaty, DC, PhD, is the Lincoln Endowed Chair of Chiropractic & Biomechanics Research and an Assistant Professor of 1) Neurosurgery & Brain Repair and 2) Medical Engineering at the University of South Florida. He received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Parker University January 2007 and practiced for five years in Loveland, CO. During that time, he continuously was asking questions about how the treatments worked on a neuromusculoskeletal level. Consequently, he enrolled in a Neuroscience program and received his PhD degree in 2014. Thereafter, he received postdoctoral research training at the Ohio State University and Mayo Clinic with emphases on sports medicine, biomechanics, and neuromechanics. While at Mayo Clinic, he became an Assistant Professor and his research included NIH-funded and mentored training. He continues his innovative research of human motion and neural control at the University of South Florida with funded research by the NIH, industry sponsors, and foundations. His interests primarily focus on injury prevention and improved rehabilitation of concussion, neck, lower back, and knee-related issues. He is passionate about research and increasing the research footprint of chiropractic worldwide.

    Chiropractors often feel isolated in the discussion of mainstream healthcare, believing an equal seat at the healthcare table is far fetched. This class will prove that this isolated thinking is a way of the past, and the future of healthcare depends on integration of chiropractic, and strategic care plan for your patient is now more than ever; yet it is our job to communicate this effectively. We have invited a panel of doctors to illustrate how documentation and record keeping are communication tools that allow us to interact with the allopathic community. Documented results from Gallup Poll #3 will be followed by chiropractors focusing on different areas of interactive success between chiropractors and the medical model, showcasing how the collaborative community has the greatest benefit for patients. If chiropractic is to take a prominent seat at the healthcare table, it will have to do so with research, statistics, an established outlined care of plan as described by the participants in this panel, and in a spirit of cooperation. With the climate of society and ever changing healthcare, the time is NOW!

The attendees will be able to communicate the important principles of research study design, data interpretation, and limitations, and articulate the findings to their peers, colleagues, and patients.

    Decreasing Trends in Medical Errors Advocating Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

    The evolution of imaging clarity coupled with non-surgical spinal decompression has resulted in better clinical outcomes with less invasive procedures. Now more than ever, Neurosurgeons are looking for advocating Chiropractic Physicians to help them screen and provide treatment with Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. Recent research reporting on vertebral-axial decompression as well as FBS and individual satisfaction of surgery has driven the need for chiropractic physicians to increase their diagnostic skills in this area.

    This lecture has been designed to increase the competency of chiropractors through the following steps:

    • Recognize red flag indicators with adding a few steps to the exam.
    • Decipher when an MRI is needed as opposed to X-ray.
    • Identify when non-surgical decompression could be helpful.
    • Creating a proper physician’s review team
    • Relate statistical reports of FBS, vertebral-axial decompression reports, patient satisfaction of surgery when determining with the patient how to proceed.
